Quest for cultural safety: A grounded theory study of cultural spaces between Aboriginal patients and hospital nurses

2010

Foster-Boucher, C.H.

Description

In this study, the author explores the experiences and perceptions of nurses in caring for Indigenous patients and how they resolve and manage the basic social problem of imbalance. The author describes a four stage cyclical process for addressing imbalance: 1) recognizing tension, 2) searching for solutions, 3) turning to a new vantage point, and 4) acquiring knowledge. The study findings provide a theoretical framework for understanding the process of becoming culturally competent that may guide and inform educators and decision makers regarding responsive programming and policy change.
