Conducting a systematic review of peer reviewed research conducted in Canada, Australia, Aotearoa-New Zealand, and the United States, the authors sought to explore the emergence and characteristics of Indigenous guardian approaches to environmental governance. Their review indicated that more research was required to understand the implications of current guardian programs for Indigenous self-determination.
