In February 2022, a national assessment produced by Health Canada’s Climate Change and Health Innovation Bureau titled Health of Canadians in a Changing Climate: Advancing our Knowledge for Action, was released. This report included ten chapters and assessed the latest knowledge about the effects of climate change on health and health systems. Chapter two of the report, Climate Change and Indigenous Peoples’ Health in Canada, authored by the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH), includes key findings on specific climate change risks to First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples’ health; the role of Indigenous knowledges and rights in climate change adaptation, research and policy; and knowledge gaps for future research.
This fact sheet explores what Indigenous knowledge is, what Indigenous rights are in relation to climate change, and the current gaps in knowledge related to Indigenous knowledges and climate change. It also presents examples where Indigenous knowledges have been successfully applied to climate change action.
